The Scottish Women’s Premier League got under way today, with no major upsets recorded. Current Champions Glasgow City maintained their excellent form of having won every single domestic match for over a year and a half with a comfortable 5-0 win over Forfar Farmington at Glasgow Green.
In windy conditions, City took charge of the match from start to finish, but took until the half hour mark before opening the scoring. Striker Lisa Evans, who had started well and was causing the Forfar defence numerous problems with her pace, found herself free inside the box after a corner and wrong footed Fiona McNicol in the Forfar nets with a close range finish.
It took City until the second half before they could add to their lead. A late run into the box by full back Emma Fernon met a well placed pass from her fellow defender Leeanne Campbell to allow Fernon to score with ease from a couple of yards out.
City’s next three goals all came from Emma Mitchell. The 17 year old City midfielder moved into a more advanced position in the second half and her team took great advantage from it. Her first was a fine left foot strike into the bottom corner after being set-up by striker Suzanne Malone. The young midfielder scored her second with a well composed finish, taking down a back post cross from Fernon before firing into the back of the net.
Mitchell completed her hat-trick with another fine strike. Leanne Ross laid it back to Mitchell at the edge of the box and the midfielder again showed her prowess from distance firing a powerful shot past McNicol to make it a 5-0 win for City.
Reflecting on the win, City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki commented, “ We made five changes from the team which started against Hibernian last Sunday, but to be honest you would never have known. The depth of this squad is incredible and we feel that whatever eleven out of our nineteen strong pool we put out, can get the result we need, week after week. Today was difficult given the intensity of the wind, but the girls controlled the match. I am delighted for Emma to score her first hat-trick for the senior side, in what is only her second ever game for the First team.”
