Rangers defender Madjid Bougerra and his Algerian team mates got off to the worst start possible in the African Cup of Nation as they were beaten 3-0 by Malawi in Angola.
The defender was at fault for Malawi’s first goal, but the game was a turn off for many fans with only 1000 attending. But those who ventured into the stadium were witness to a famous win for Malawi in the Angolan capital Luanda. It was Malawi’s first ever game in the competition.
Algeria now face a tough test to qualify for the quarter finals of the tournament. They have not won the African Cup of Nations since it was held in Algeria in 1990, and on their first showing this year it looks as though they won’t be winning it any time soon.
However they received help from the other game in the group between Angola and Mali, which ended 4-4. Amazingly the Angolans were 4-0 up with only 11 minutes remaining and 4-1 with just two minutes of the 90 remaining, and were stunned when Mali scored two in the remaining minutes of the game.
The result keeps Algeria within the mix, but they will have to vastly improve their performance if they are to have any chance of progessing.
Bougherra and Algeria’s nex match is against Mali on Thursday.
