Scotland would have cost McBookie.com a fortune if we’d reached the World Cup finals. But the firm are still gutted George Burley’s men didn’t make it and that failure will come into sharp focus when eight European sides bid for the final four places in two-legged play-offs.

While the real action takes place in Moscow, Athens, Lisbon and Dublin, the Scots head to Cardiff for a less than glamorous friendly against Wales. While victory won’t excuse a woeful qualifying campaign it will give Burley’s boys a much-needed lift – and I think they’ll get one.

Wales are 17-10 favourites courtesy of home advantage with Scotland looking nicely priced at 31-20. The draw pays 11-5. James McFadden has been playing well for Birmingham in recent weeks and is 13-2 to bag the opener with Steven Fletcher 6-1 and Kenny Miller 7-1.

With the likes of Craig Bellamy missing, the Welsh could suffer and it could be 2-0 Scotland (12-1).

Cardiff keeper David Marshall will replace the injured Craig Gordon between the sticks and is 2-1 to help Scotland keep a clean sheet. The ex-Celtic keeper is 20-1 to save a penalty, 16-1 to concede one and 25-1 to be red-carded. Another Cardiff star, striker Ross McCormack, is 9-4 to score, 8-1 to net first and 20-1 to score directly from a free-kick.

McBookie.com have priced up mythical matches featuring Scotland and sides they could have faced in the play-offs. We are 4-1 v Russia (2-5) with the draw 7-2, 9-2 against Portugal (4-9) with the draw 3-1, 11-4 v France with the draw 4-5 and 5-2 v Greece with the draw 4-5.

This is the odds on how many Scotland will score in Wales against what the play-off contenders will do today.

With no SPL games the big match north of the border is Queen of the South v joint Division One leaders Dundee. The Dens men will be without top scorer Leigh Griffiths who is in Azerbaijan with Scotland Under-21s and that could be crucial. Queens are big and strong and could edge a vital win. Back them at 5-2.

Another side going well are Ross County and they should win at Ayr where the home side have conceded six in their last two games, both defeats. County are 17-20.

In the Second Division I like the look of leaders Stirling Albion who get back on track at East Fife after a few weeks during which displays have been affected by speculation over the future of boss Allan Moore who is now staying. Take Albion at 49-50. Peterhead are on a great run and look cracking value at 3-4 to beat Arbroath at home. Livingston will be one of the first sides on accers and should see off Albion Rovers. It’s 24-50 the home.

Scottish treble of the week: Scotland, Stirling, Livingston
