After last night’s violence involving Rangers fans, UEFA have now came out and charged the Ibrox side with improper conduct of their supporters. The reigning SPL champions will have to wait until next Thursday with UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body making their decision then.
The charge was handed out after the European football body received their official delegate’s report on the incident, which overshadowed the 1-1 draw with Romanian minnows Unirea Urziceni.
Rangers supporters were seen fighting with police at half-time, with a number of fans caught ripping out seats and hurling them towards stewards, while Romanian police used CS gas spray to disperse the fans.
If found guilty, Rangers could face a wide range of punishments from a fine to Fans being banned from attending future European matches up to a ban on participating on playing European football for a season.
Rangers Chief Executive Martin Bain said, “We have been informed by Uefa that disciplinary proceedings have been instigated in relation to the throwing of missiles and crowd disturbances. As already stated, I am not for a moment condoning the action of some supporters to the unfolding of events within the stadium. But, as a club, the preparations which were agreed and insisted upon in advance were not adhered to and this in turn we feel jeopardised the safety of our supporters.”
He continued to voice his opinion on the belief that over-zealous policing was partly to blame for the trouble.
Bain added, “We are fully aware of the indiscriminate use of CS gas and the difficulties experienced by our fans accessing the stadium. All these factors will be presented fully by the club to Uefa in our submission.”

I think Martin Bain should say he is happy to cooperate fully with Uefa over this. Rather than seeking to emphasize the fact that two turnstiles were shut. Certainly a degree of deja vu about all this. Remind anyone else of jumboTVs in Picadilly Gardens?

Some Rangers fans behaved badly but it was a pretty minor incident provoked by an elderly Rangers fan being assaulted by stewards. Fans of other clubs shouldn’t get too excited.

George having read an account or should I say an alleged account of what happened on Wednesday night – it seemingly occurred after someone through an irish tricolor towards the Rangers section. Now whether you like it or not goading is part and parcel with the game and take for example last night – Celtic fans were goaded by Hamburg fans with a massive Union Jack in Hamburg colours with the words – No Surrender below it. Now if a wee tricolor sparked all that trouble on Wednesday night, why didnt that huge Union Jack and Rangers fan motto of No Surrender spark a similar response from Celtic fans??
Whether you like it or not – whether the stewards provoked the incident or not – the club will still be probably be punished for the fans behaviour. While Unirea and the local authorities should be taken to task over their part also. Trying to pin the blame firmly on the lap of the other side is deflecting from the truth – it takes two to tango.
