Former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan could be set for a quick return to football management with former club Southampton. New owner Markus Liebharr sacked Mark Wottee as Saints Head Coach yesterday, less than 24 hours after buying the club. And the Swiss billionaire has reportedly ear marked Strachan as the man to head up his new regime at St. Mary’s, either as manager or as a Director of Football/ Football Advisory role.
Saints have refused to deny reports that Strachan was at the club’s training ground yesterday, hours after Wotte’s dismissal.
In Strachan’s first stint as manager of Southampton he led the Saints to the 2003 FA Cup Final, which they ultimately lost, and he quit a year later. He then took charge at Celtic, and started horrendouslywith a 5-0 drubbing by minnows Artmedia Bratislava in theChampions League qualifiers. But he bounced back to win three SPL titles with Celtic, only to lose out on a fourth on the final day of the season to rival Rangers. He quit several days after the end of the season.
Southampton’s financial plight may mean they start in League One with a 10-point penalty after a disastrous relegation from the Championship. Reserve coach Stewart Henderson takes charge on a temporary basis until a manager is appointed.
While Strachan is top of Markus Liebharr’s list, another name being touted for the job is ex-Reading boss Steve Coppell who quit his managerial post at Reading after failing to lead the club back into the Premiership.
We would like to hear from Southampton fans - would you welome Gordon Strachan back to St. Mary’s?
