celticNeil Lennon has been earmarked by English league side Stockport County as their No.1 target for the vacant manager’s job at the club. The swoop for the Celtic coach has been undertaken by one time Celtic striker Jim Melrose, whose consortium are on the brink of taking over the Edgeley Park club. However reports surfaced over the weekend that MK Dons gaffer Paul Ince wants Lennon to link up with him at the Milton Keynes side in a coaching role.

But while Milton Keynes is not considered to be a serious option for the former Celtic captain, reports down south insist Melrose is determined to table a far more tempting financial package.

Despite Tony Mowbray bringing in his own back room staff in the guise of Mark Venus and former Celtic cult figure Peter Grant, Lennon was promised a part in the former Celtic defender’s back room staff. The exact role and duties have not been defined yet, but it was rumoured that he was to take over the running of the reserve side, now that Willie McStay has left the club to manage Hungarian side Ujpest, in a bid to unearth new talent from Eastern Europe for the Parkhead club.

Lennon has had ambitions to become a manager ever since deciding to quit Celtic as a player two years ago. But given his desire to be part of the club he will only be tempted into accepting the Stockport job if he feels there is no real need for him in Mowbray’s new regime.
