Glasgow City have been tasked with some extremely difficult matches in the UEFA Women’s Champions League after the draw was made today at the UEFA Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
City who are in Group A, will face Gintra, the Champions of Lithuania, who will host City’s first round group, and Norchi, the Champions of Georgia. However, City’s biggest test will be German Frauen Bundesliga runners-up, Bayern Munich, who lost this season’s League to Potsdam by a goal difference of one solitary goal.
City face the mighty Bayern Munich in their first match and Head Coach Eddie Wolecki is under no illusions how tough the match will be. He said, “Bayern were within a whisker of winning the German League this year and we all know the quality of German club football is the best in the world. Without a doubt, in my opinion, we have the toughest first round match possible, in facing the Germans.
“Last year we lined up against 1. FFC Frankfurt and we saw just how good they were and they finished fourth in the League this season. However, in saying all this, playing the very best is the whole reason teams want to be in the Champions League and we look forward to all three matches. It is a chance to really test ourselves at the highest level and a tremendous reward for such a successful season at the club.”
City are third seeds in their group of four, with Bayern Munich ranked number one by UEFA. The Germans are followed by Gintra, with the Georgians ranked as fourth seeds.
Editor – City are Scotland’s sole representatives in the Champions League, and Scotzine.com wishes them all the best in the competition as they fly the flag for Scottish Women’s Football. The club are looking for businesses and individuals to donate money to the cause to help them take part in the Women’s Champions League. To participate in the first round alone, it would cost Glasgow City £12,000 and the Women’s side do not get the level of funding, sponsorship or monies like the guys get – so every little helps. To donate please go to their website at www.glasgowcityladiesfc.co.uk
City’s Group A schedule is as follows:
30th July
Bayern Munich v Glasgow City
Gintra Universitetas v Norchi Dinamoeli
1st August
Bayern Munich v Norchi Dinamoeli
Glasgow City v Gintra Universitetas
4th August
Gintra Universitetas v Bayern Munich
Norchi Dinamoeli v Glasgow City

Just a wee heads up in the next issue there is an interview with the manager of Glasgow City – Peter Caulfield on the treble winners, his thoughts on the Womens game and who he would pick for a Womens XI.

Along with Peter Caulfield is Tony Gervaise who are both in my opinion the best coaches/managers from Scotland.
Tony the manager at Arsenal has a problem when it comes to taking the very best Scottish talent down South to Arsenal.
Firstly is the cost asked of family but the biggest problem is the highly educated who wish to progress their studies at Scottish Universities.
This can/is an advantage that Glasgow City I believe have fathomed out at their top level..
No better manager and his coaches in Scotland.
Disadvantage of playing in Scotland is the overall standard..Many fine teams but from halfway down the Premier league clubs are no competition in preparing for EUFA competition.
Reaching the second round last season was very good but may have been better if Glasgows top players had been available. Players due to work priorities missed the earlier games in Norway?.
Hopefully for Peter he has his senior squad available backed by a few of his very young teenagers who have been very successful youth caps many times over.
If Peter decides to enlist some of his youth quite possibly his thinking is more for the future than present.
Young players sitting on the bench can broaden their footballing knowledge. Used wisely they wouldn’t let the seniors down if called upon.
My very best wishes to Glasgow City, Peter, Eady, et al Hopefully quick success at fund raising. Allowing concentration for what is to come in the football sense
